After the volunteering trip, we had a week free to ourselves to travel round the areas of Peru we wanted to. Me and my friends decided on going to Cusco and staying there for the week, which meant flying from Talara to Lima, then from Lima to Cusco.
The first day in Cusco, we left to acclimatise, and to have a wander around the area. This entailed in going round the local markets, seeing the sights and going out to eat at some of the nearby restaurants. On the following day, we decided to take on Rainbow Mountain! This was such an amazing experience, and the views were incredible. The wall up the mountain was very hard due to the altitude, however we all managed to make it to the top. The colours of the mountain were wonderful, and the surrounding area looked amazing.
On one of the other days, we travelled up to Aguas Calientes, the town just outside of Machu Picchu. During the day, we went up to the Hot Springs, where we had a few drinks at the local hostel we stayed at. The next morning we woke up early to get the bus up to Machu Picchu. This definitely had to be one of the highlights of my trip, the view we got of Machu Picchu was amazing - the 'postcard picture'. After our morning in Machu Picchu, we had another wander around the area, and grabbed a bite to eat before we got the train back to Cusco. On the last day we just relaxed, walked around the town, and got ready for our long travels back to the UK.
